The National Grocers Association published results from its latest survey of independent grocery shoppers and found that eight out of ten shoppers spent more than 50% of their “Fresh Food Spend” in supermarkets versus other outlets.
The Washington, D.C.-based organization released results at the NGA Show in Las Vegas in February, and online at NationalGrocers.org.
More survey highlights:
>Independent shoppers said they’d like to see improvement in three areas:
- 24% said more variety (meats, seafood, brand names, fresh produce/organics, ethnic foods)
- 14% said they’d like better service (more cashiers, shorter lines, friendlier staff)
- 11% said more affordable prices/more frequent sales/promotions
>Independent grocers were seen as a destination for locally sourced products
>55% of respondents said they thought nutritional ratings on-shelf were extremely/very important, a 50% increase from last year.
20% of independent shoppers shop for groceries online, up 16% from the previous year, with 74% who shop online using delivery and 44% using click and collect.
The survey was conducted by Harris Poll, with 1902 respondents split into geographic groupings of urban, suburban and rural shoppers, segmented by consumers who shop at independent supermarkets.
