After a Houston newspaper picked up on Lidl’s permitting process in the suburb of Conroe, San Antonio media outlets are reporting that Lidl is purchasing land elsewhere in the Lone Star State.
The German discount chain, which has a U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Va., says it is focused on its Eastern launch and announced it is building a $100 million regional headquarters in Cartersville, Ga., in late June.
The of 20 store openings this year occurred in Virginia and North Carolina, and the retailer has said it plans to open 100 stores in its first year.
Media reports speculated it plans to establish a foothold in Texas next.
The San Antonio Express-News reported the company purchased 4.2 acres on the east side of the city, about a mile from an H-E-B. A spokesman told the Express-News the company is “pursuing a number of locations in the state.”
“Our operational focus at the moment remains along the east coast, where we’re opening our initial stores,” spokesperson Will Harwood told the Express-News.
