Global avocado marketer and producer Index Fresh says the California avocado season has officially begun, timed to meet the high demand during the football playoff and bowl season.

Index Fresh said that, with its strong California grower base, it is well positioned to supplement low Mexican inventories with support promotions. Mexican supply has fallen short of meeting regular weekly U.S. demand and this shortage falls during preplanned marketing campaigns promoting wellness and football festivities, according to a news release.

The company said the early start to the California avocado season provides retailers and foodservice operators with crucial option during a key avocado sales period. California’s harvest won’t entirely replace Mexican volume, but it will supplement the market, reducing dependency on Mexican imports as the source, Index Fresh said.

“We’re excited to begin packing California avocados,” said John Dmytriw, vice president of business development at Index Fresh. “This season’s crop is looking exceptional and will make a positive impact in the U.S. market. Buyers can look forward to a consistent and high-quality supply.”

Index Fresh said its strong California grower base allows it to respond swiftly to market demands and ensure a steady supply during critical periods.

“Our deep roots in avocado marketing and extensive California grower relationships enable us to deliver premium avocados when the market needs them most,” Dmytriw said.

The company said the state estimates an above-average crop of about 375 million pounds, which is an 8% increase year over year and is expected to run through September.
