A perennial favorite, strawberries were the No. 5 most popular fruit in Fresh Trends 2016. Of Fresh Trends respondents, 60% reported strawberry purchases in the past 12 months.
By a large margin, likelihood of purchase also increased according to income. Those in the top income bracket who earned $100,000 per year and more were 17 percentage points more likely to buy strawberries than those in the lowest income group.
Strawberry promotions have increased in frequency during the past five years, according to the USDA's Retail Report.
In 2012, strawberries were promoted in an average of 8,876 stores per week compared with 10,018 stores per week in 2016. One-pound clamshells were promoted about 10 times more frequently than 2-pound clamshells in 2016.
