Oranges were the No. 4 most popular fruit for The Packer's Fresh Trends 2016 respondents, with 61% reporting purchase over the past 12 months.
The “orange” category in Fresh Trends also includes clementines, one of the fastest-growing categories in citrus. Lemons were No. 8, limes No. 15 and grapefruit just squeaked in the top 20 at No. 19.
While orange promotions show a dramatic drop-off in the summer, lemons and limes continue to fluctuate, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Retail Report. The average advertised price for navel oranges from 1/1/16 to 7/1/16 was $1.21 per pound, according to the report.
