Fresh Trends Focus: Blueberries

Fresh Trends Focus: Blueberries

by Pamela Riemenschneider, Apr 27, 2017

Blueberries were the No. 8 fruit on The Packer's Fresh Trends 2017, with 45% of respondents reporting they bought the “little blue dynamos” in the past 12 months.

North America's crop grew from 193 million pounds in 1995 to 750.2 million pounds in 2015. U.S. per capita blueberry consumption increased nearly 600% from 1994 to 2014, more than any other fruit or vegetable studied, and the industry's research indicates further room for growth.

Over the past five years, the average number of stores with blueberries on ad has increased 39%, from an average of 5,958 stores with blueberries on ad per week to 8,291, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Retail Report.

During the same time period, the average advertised priced increased 7%.
