This holiday season, consumers might consider reimagining gift giving with a healthy twist.

Instead of gifting partridges in pear trees, one's true love could be giving foods that will help to be one's best self — from the inside out, says author and speaker Jaya Jaya Myra. The bestselling author of two books, TEDx motivational speaker and the founder and board chair of Gita for the Masses suggests gifting nutrition and wellness instead.

“The holiday season is a time for joy, connection and giving. Amid the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating and hosting, it’s easy to forget one of the most important gifts of all: the gift of health and wellness," Myra said. "While you’re busy spreading cheer to others, don’t overlook the opportunity to nurture yourself. This year, instead of traditional partridges and pear trees, why not focus on foods that nourish your body and mind from the inside out?”

Myra’s list of 12 superfoods delivers both physical and mental benefits, the author said, and produce ranks high on the list. These foods are more than just nutritious — they’re nature’s way of helping you feel your best, no matter how hectic the season gets, she added.

“So, as you sing along to the familiar carol this year, imagine replacing the ‘12 drummers drumming’ with vibrant superfoods that enhance your vitality," Myra said. "Each day brings a new opportunity to savor delicious, wholesome options that help you stay balanced and thrive. After all, a healthy mind and body is truly the gift that keeps on giving.”

Myra’s list of the 12 foods of Christmas includes the following produce entries:

  • Dark leafy greens — Nutrient-packed greens like spinach, kale and Swiss chard are rich in vitamins A, C and K, along with folate, which supports brain health and reduces stress. Their anti-inflammatory properties also promote overall well-being, helping one stay calm and collected during holiday chaos.
  • Sweetpotatoes — These vibrant root vegetables are loaded with beta-carotene, fiber and vitamin C, providing sustained energy and immune support. Their natural sweetness makes them a comforting holiday dish while giving the body the nutrients it needs to thrive.
  • Nuts — Almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios and Brazil nuts are packed with brain-boosting omega-3s, magnesium and healthy fats. Studies show they can reduce symptoms of depression and keep the mood bright all winter long.
  • Cranberries — These festive little fruits are bursting with antioxidants and vitamin C. They help combat oxidative stress and boost immune health to help stay healthy for holiday gatherings.
  • Oranges — These citrus powerhouses are high in vitamin C, which not only boosts the immune system, but also provides an energizing pick-me-up. They're ideal for keeping stamina up during holiday celebrations.
  • Brussels sprouts — Brussels sprouts are fiber-rich and loaded with vitamin K, which supports bone health and reduces inflammation. Their benefits for gut health are particularly noteworthy since a healthy gut is strongly linked to better mood and reduced anxiety.
  • Pomegranates — Packed with polyphenols and antioxidants, pomegranate seeds improve heart health and reduce inflammation, which can enhance both physical and emotional well-being. They’re as festive as they are nutritious — perfect for brightening up holiday dishes or snack trays.
“The beauty of gifting food to a friend or loved one is that you’re giving them something they’ll actually use and value, and not something that’ll end up in the trash can or regifting pile," Myra said. "And with a little attention to your gift, you can also show how much you value their mental and emotional well-being. There are so many food options that can naturally boost mental and emotional health, making food the perfect gift for this high-stress time of year."
