In highlighting its recent sustainability achievements, Food Lion says it diverted 82% of its waste in 2023, equating to 305,000 tons of diverted material.

The Salisbury, N.C.-based grocer also reported that it made significant strides in recycling, processing thousands of tons of materials, including 181.3 thousand tons of cardboard and paper, 8.7 thousand tons of plastic film, bags and bottles, and 18.8 thousand tons of food through various sustainable methods such as animal feed, anaerobic digestion and composting.

The company says it has demonstrated its dedication to combating food insecurity by donating over 73 million pounds of edible food to neighbors in need.
