Yakima, Wash.-based FirstFruits Farms celebrated the second National Opal Apple Day last month, which the company says it started to highlight the apple’s unique traits.

Discovered in Europe in 1999, bright yellow Opal apples are a cross between a golden delicious apple and a topaz apple. The variety, sold exclusively in North America by FirstFruits Farms, boasts natural non-browning properties and a sweet flavor, according to a news release.

“Opal apples have a way of bringing people together, and we are excited about the possibilities for the next National Opal Apple Day,” Emily Autrey, marketing manager for FirstFruits Marketing, in the news release.

Retailers participating included Target, Charlie’s Produce, Dave’s Marketplace and Hy-Vee. FirstFruits Marketing said retailers used eye-catching store signage and social media to promote the event.

"We had a great day! Thank you so much for your support. We sold more Opals than any other apple," John D. De Taeye, a representative from Hy-Vee, said in a news release.
