Of the four stores we saw on the CPMA 2017 Retail Tour, this was the most discount-oriented. I'm no stranger to a Wal-Mart store, but I thought there were some interesting differences.
1. The RPC displays were black. Many of them I've seen in the U.S. have gone to the brown basket look.
2. Signage was bright red, a motif I haven't seen in U.S. stores before. Extreme low prices -- the lowest prices for lemons I saw all day -- were at Wal-Mart. Lemons were more than $2 each across the street.
3. While there wasn't a tremendous amount of variety, there were some items you'd not see in such abundance in the U.S., like shallots and eggplants. There were three displays of eggplant at this store.
4. Most of the Wal-Mart stores I've seen in the U.S. opt not to do a discount/clearance area. This store had a rack and a prime real estate end cap for markdowns.
