Holiday Foods & Groceries, Inc. was founded in 1969 by Lloyd & Ruby Winkler. At the time, they were also co-owners of J. Winkler & Sons, a wholesale grocer in Dale, Indiana. Lloyd along with his son Russ, saw a need and opportunity to build a supermarket in Santa Claus, IN.
Holiday Foods was the first retail business to open in the Holly Plaza Shopping Center, now known as Kringle Place, in 1970. The original size of the store in Santa Claus was 10,000 square feet. A 6,000 square foot addition was added later to meet the needs of the growing community. That business created 13 new jobs for Spencer County residents.
As the demand of groceries grew, so did the corporation. Currently located in three counties and employing over 300 people, six stores serve the local communities. In December of 2014, Holiday Foods & Groceries, Inc. became Holiday Foods LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Winkler Inc., allowing the business to continue to be locally owned and operated.
