John R Renna Jr., the founder of Soto Provision, was no stranger to the food industry. Growing up during the 1940’s and 1950’s on the family turkey farm and processing plant, one of the largest on the West Coast, he raised turkeys and won awards for their products and their efforts.
John took time out from the farm for a stint with the US Forest Service, and to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Returning to the food industry after his service to his country, he helped manage a food Distribution warehouse in Vernon, California before starting a venture of his own. As Soto Provision grew, John’s wife Catana, who had grown up in the food industry as well, came to work with him. Catana also had grown up in the food business. Her grandfather, who had started the Eastside Market Italian Deli in 1929, teamed up with her father and uncle and became the founding partners of the oldest sausage company in Los Angeles (Pontrelli and Laricchia’s Italian Sausages).
John and Catana started a family, and as the family grew, so did Soto Provision. The children followed in their parent’s footsteps, and began to work in the warehouse as soon as they were able. John and Catana’s son, Johnny, took over day-to-day management of the operation in 2000, and Guy, Johnny’s older brother also works in the office. Together, along with the rest of the committed Soto Staff, they carry on the tradition of quality and service that has been a hallmark of the family business since the beginning.
