Gourmet Mushrooms was founded in 1977 in Sonoma County, California and was the first to commercially cultivate shiitake mushrooms in the United States. Our mushrooms were initially introduced to the up and coming restaurants featuring Americana cuisine in the San Francisco Bay Area and quickly expanded beyond California’s borders. We’ve since grown into one of the largest specialty mushroom companies in the U.S. with farms at our original location in Sebastopol, CA and an additional farm located in Scottville, MI that opened in 2016.
While we no longer grow shiitake, we now grow a variety of different specialty mushrooms species in a very sustainable growing process. Our mushrooms are forest mushrooms that are grown in bottles on a hardwood substrate that mimics the stumps and fallen logs that our mushrooms would be found growing on in the forest. All of our mushrooms are certified organically grown on U.S. sourced growing mediums at our Primus/HAACP certified U.S. facilities.
We currently are growing 5 varieties of organic specialty mushrooms; all varieties are grown year-round and provide the uniqueness of wild mushrooms but with none of the seasonality or need for specialized species identification or cleaning associated with wilds. Specialty mushrooms are one of the fasted growing segments of the produce industry with consumer interest that has exploded over the last few years.
We offer mixed and single variety retails pack in 4, 8, and 16oz sizes, depending on the SKU, and offer 6lb bulk cases to supplement your bulk mushroom display.
We’ve been in a few different Costco regions, currently in Midwest and the Northeast with a very successful program offering our 16oz Chef Sampler mixed variety pack. We think something similar would be a great fit for your customers as well.
