Knight’s Appleden Fruit Ltd has been a family business for over 100 years. Our orchards are located within the scenic hillsides of Northumberland County just 120km east of Toronto. Excellent proximity to Lake Ontario ensures that the cool deep water regulates summer and winter temperatures. Cool night breezes coming off the water provide excellent colour and firmness to our apples, making them some of the best apples in North America. The different types of soil in the area are graded for specific apple varieties. For instance, heavy clay loam soil which stays cooler is excellent for McIntosh Apples, and lighter sandier soil is better for larger apples such as Red Delicious.
Quality has always been a key part of Knight’s recipe for success. Our quality control begins in the orchard with an integrated pest management system that ensures we respond only to pests that may be harmful to our apples. We also train our workers in apple picking and handling to avoid unnecessary bruising or damage to the fruit. In fact, every bin of freshly picked fruit is inspected when it arrives from the orchard. Whether the apples are destined for immediate sale or will be going into storage, we only retain the best.
Our Controlled Atmosphere onsite storage is capable of keeping 50,000 bushels of apples at the peak of freshness throughout the selling year. Knight’s automated packing facility is designed to ensure the highest quality product. Multiple times each day, apple firmness, sugar content, and defects are monitored throughout our grading and sorting process. And to maintain our premium quality, Knight’s apples are delivered to your local Retail store by our own fleet of temperature controlled vehicles.
