John Goddard, Sr. started in the produce business as a teenager. It was the mid-1920s and his delivery vehicle was a horse and buggy. In the 1930s he became a partner in the business and by the 1950s he had bought the business, Standard Fruit Company. In the 1970s, Mr. Goddard's twin sons, Bob and Dick, joined him in the business.
In the early years, Mr. Goddard's customers were mainly neighborhood grocery stores. As small grocery stores transitioned into larger supermarkets with distribution centers, the restaurant industry was just starting to grow. These evolving market conditions shifted Goddard Produce into its current business model.
Today Goddard Produce is a leading produce supplier to restaurants, schools, country clubs, and institutional facilities across four Florida counties - Polk, Pasco, Hillsborough, and Highlands. They are proud to have longstanding customer relationships, including the Polk County School Board.
From small beginnings and a rich history, Goddard Produce is always evolving. Their product line has grown to include dairy, poultry, and other miscellaneous items such as fry oil. Forty plus years later, the 3rd generation is now assisting Bob and Dick with sales, technologies, and other projects to continue Goddard Produce's legacy.
