The area known as Los Luceros was farmed by Spanish settlers as early as 1710, and by Pueblo people for centuries before that.
Ice's Organic Farm, owned and worked by Ron and Gayle Ice, lies in the Espanola Valley of the Rio Grande in the shadow of Black Mesa, west of the Taos highway and eight miles north of Espanola, NM.
The Ices started farming in 1990 when they moved to the Espanola Valley. That year they rented a tractor to plow and put in a small vegetable garden. The following year they increased their planting and began taking their harvest to the Santa Fe Farmers' Market.
The farming schedule starts in late fall with the planting of garlic. Spring planting begins with sugar snap peas and frost-resistant vegetables. Most of the other vegetables and flowers are planted in May.
