The Municipality of Skagway is accessible from the Yukon Territory via permanent road access to the north, allowing intermodal access to Pacific shipping lanes through its existing port infrastructure on the Northern Lynn Canal in Southeast Alaska. Due to its strategic location, the Port of Skagway has provided key transportation import/export capacity for the Yukon for over a century.
Starting in 2007, a dramatic increase in base metals and rare earth mineral exploration and mining investment in the Yukon and adjoining territories has increased demand for ore transfer and shipping services provided at and through the Port of Skagway. This development, combined with Skagway’s current and future cruise ship requirements for moorage and increasing bulk cargo throughput at the port, has prompted the Municipality to plan and invest in additional port infrastructure.
